The next day, a restrained disquiet lay over the pair of them at breakfast as they planned the farm work for that day, as was now natural for Judy. Just before they went out, James’ phone went, and he found himself addressed by the very phantom they had viewed the night before. In exactly the bland and detached tones they had overheard. He introduced himself by the name on his new passport, which he absurdly hesitated over, and declared the toweringly improbable idea that he had chanced past the Cross Keys last night and had learnt that James was into growing Siberian kale. James noted that they must pay more attention than he thought in the pub when he went on about his enthusiasms. The voice went on at great length with a tale that he was right into this incredibly heath-giving vegetable and was promoting it in the States and was even thinking of growing some himself. He went tediously on, repeating himself at times, about how he wanted to know more about a plant he evidently knew nothing about already. James listened with an impossible mixture of feelings; the tremendous danger this man might represent mixed with repressing an urge to laugh at his transparent amateurishness. He knew he must go forward with this thought and put on the best imitation of delight for their supposed mutual interest. A time was arranged for meeting that afternoon. He called Judy back, as she was already on her way out into the yard when he put the phone down. He told her about the call and then sat in silence opposite her in the little hallway behind the front door. He remained like that for some time on the large frame that contained the shelves for their outdoor boots, and she settled herself in a big wooden chair of uncertain age.

“Right, we know that they would seem to be after you. Now, somebody in the pub may have told them you were here and then again maybe not. And if they are all the same ‘them’, they should know at least that you were here from those who took Greg away. But we don’t want to make it easy for them, so your job for the day is to go up to the chalet and tidy it out for the summer tourists. Get changed again and away up you go – take something for lunch, there is nothing up there. You’ll need to be right out the way. I’ll call you when things are clear here.” James sat a long while more right there by the door trying to think everything through. She reappeared and pecked him on the cheek. She knew that this was wise, and the thought was in her head that maybe the chalet was not far enough away. She strode away up the hill in the sunshine and was lost among the pines as a breeze softly sounded its way through their swaying tops.

James next called
